KLU - Connecting the Digital with the Physical

KLU is one of our internal R&D projects, a content platform that seamlessly connects digital media with the physical world. By using custom QR codes, we’ve enabled users to link digital memories to objects in the real-world, making the intangible, tangible.

Objectives

Our vision was to empower both businesses and consumers by creating meaningful connections between their digital content and physical items. We achieved this through an intuitive mobile application that simplifies the creation of unique KLU QR codes, or ‘klues,’ and doesn’t require an app for others to scan and share these codes.

Our Approach

Leveraging agile methodologies, we rapidly iterated the mobile application and its supporting infrastructure. This approach allowed us to swiftly launch KLU, enabling continuous refinement and enhancement of the platform based on real user feedback.

Outcomes

Launched in 2022 and available for free on both Apple and Android app stores, KLU made a significant mark during the London Design Festival 2022. In collaboration with Creative Works, Yonder, Blackhorse Workshop, and Switchboard Studios, we facilitated a digital historical trail along Blackhorse Lane in London. This innovative project involved creating a series of 8 QR codes placed on posters to denote significant landmarks, each linked to a custom video describing its history and importance.

Challenges and Solutions

Building Awareness: The saturation of app stores presented a significant challenge. We tackled this by leveraging social media content and PPC campaigns to increase visibility and attract more users to KLU.

Reducing User Friction: To simplify the user experience, we introduced pre-generated KLU stickers. These stickers come with a QR code that can be programmed using the KLU app and then attached to any object, eliminating the need for users to print QR codes directly from the app.

Lessons Learned

The launch of KLU highlighted a critical lesson: achieving success in today’s technology landscape requires a balanced focus on both product development and marketing. An effective app demands as much dedication to outreach and user acquisition as it does to engineering and design.
